Mountain Kids Swim Lessons has moved indoors!

This Spring set will run on Saturday afternoons at the Fernie pool and introducing our new location... Canada's Best Value Inn, Fernie! For those of you following along since MKSL's humble beginnings in 2020 at Tie Lake, you'll know this has been a long while in the making, after a couple of other attempted negotiations, and sending proposals to hotels all over town these last 2 years. We are so grateful to have a private space to swim, and to open up more swim lessons to our local community. Lessons will run on Sunday and Tuesday afternoons, and this location will be offered to beginner swimmers only*.

Congratulations to all our Winter swimmers, it was a pleasure to witness their bravery and progress!

Spring 2022 - Indoor Lessons

Canada's Best Value Inn - Pool.jpg

Spring Swim Lessons are now full - thanks to all those who signed up! It was our busiest yet, with nearly 90 swimmers pre-registering!

Due to popular demand, we will now be offering Parents and Tots swim lessons this set! Lessons will be parented for 1-3 year olds at our new location, Canada's Best Value Inn on Friday mornings - now full.

The next set of private swim lessons is now underway! Spring lesson registration has been on hold as we waited for Spring pool schedules to be released, plus closures due to Easter and a Swim Club Meet, plus a 2 weekend Lifesaving Instructor Course I have now completed, as well as finalizing the new hotel agreement, and setting up a new booking and registration system... busy times! Thanks for your patience everyone, I'm excited to get back into it :)

The pool at Canada's Best Value Inn, Fernie (shown above) is approximately 4 meters x 8 meters and will be heated to 90 degrees (32.2 Celsius), which is similar to the leisure pool at Fernie Aquatic Center. The depth is 3ft to 5ft and there is also a small hot tub to warm up in after lessons, with change rooms and showers available too.   * Beginner swimmers can be of any age (3 years plus for unparented lessons) - from their very first swim lesson up to being able to swim approximately 10 meters independently. In Red Cross terms, this includes Sea Otter, Salamander, Sunfish, Crocodile, Swim Kids 1 and Swim Kids 2, plus possibly Whale or Swim Kids 3. Lessons will also be available to those who have a special reason for seeking lessons in a more quiet and private pool (e.g. sensory sensitivities, ASD, ADHD, easily overstimulated, hearing loss, adults, fear of water, 2SLGBTQIA+).

This set we will also be launching our new booking and registration system, Jackrabbit Swim! This will allow parents/guardians to be able to create a family profile to access the Parent Portal, then search and book lessons, and complete waivers, all in one place. You will be able to check your upcoming lessons, as well as click on the Skills feature to see up to date progress updates, whenever you like.

Here are the details:

  • Lessons at Canada's Best Value Inn will run on Sundays (May 1, 8, 22 and 29) and Tuesday afternoons (April 26, May 3, 10, 17 and 24). plus Parents & Babies/Toddlers small group lessons will run Fridays mornings (May 6, 13, 20 and 27).

  • Lessons at Fernie Pool will run on Saturday afternoons (April 30, May 7, 14, 21 and 28). See pre-registration link below for times.

  • Each private lesson can include 1 or 2 swimmers of a similar swim ability. You can team up with a friend, or be matched up by us.

  • Private lessons cost $32 per lesson for 1 swimmer, or $38 per lesson for 2 swimmers ($19 for each swimmer) – not including drop-in fees for the pools.

  • Option 1 (NEW): We will be offering a new simplified swim level system (Beginner 1/2, Intermediate 1/2, Advanced 1/2), which will focus on strong survival swimming and developing swimming competency and confidence (before working on stroke development), rather than general water safety and theoretical boating skills. Click here for all the details.

  • Option 2: Mountain Kids Swim Lessons is an approved Red Cross Independent Training Partner, soon to be Lifesaving Society Affiliate too. You will be given the choice to work towards Red Cross Swim Levels if you would like to - ideal only if your intention is to join group lessons later.

  • Priority will be given to those already on the waitlist - who filled out the Winter/Spring Expression of Interest form below, or who pre-registered for the previous attempt at organizing Spring lessons.

  • Please note that, while we have permission and support to run these private lessons, there is no affiliation with Sparwood Recreation and Leisure Center, the District of Sparwood, Fernie Aquatic Center or the City of Fernie. Masks and proof of double vaccination are no longer required at any location. Private lessons are all unparented (ages 3+), and a face shield may be worn by the Instructor for close contact as necessary.

Common FAQ:

  • * Similar ability means they will learn well together. Example 1: If one swimmer can barely swim 2M, but the other swimmer can confidently swim 10M, then the more proficient swimmer will not learn as much, as we will need to stay shallow and close. Example 2: If one swimmer can swim 5M, and the other can swim 10M (or 10M versus 20M), this may work fine as they can complete different distances as they progress. This is especially so for swimmers 7 years and over, as the Instructor does not need to stay within arms reach, so each swimmer can be working on slightly different skills.

  • We are more than willing to adapt lessons to suit your child's needs and preferences in a patient, supportive and encouraging environment - please ask if you have any questions or requests.

  • We are also able to directly bill or invoice for home schooled children (e.g. SD5 physical education or e-Streams) or for children with a diagnosis (e.g. I am also a Behavior Interventionist service provider through Autism funding), and are set up in both systems already.
